About

Dictionary Description: sojourn \SO-jurn; so-JURN as “To stay as a temporary resident”.

So here is your chance to find out what I think about and look at from a daily basis.  Be warned, as the Eagles song “Hotel California” states, “You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.”

I started this blog a while ago on the Wordpress blogging service but because of some of the restrictions of Wordpress.com and it is not many I got disillusioned with keeping the blog there and created my own wordpress site.

This is my chance to run the blog on my own server and to do with this blog as I please.

Initially I was thinking that I would run two separate blogs, but I decided against it. I seldom post things about politics and other related issues. Although when something gets my attention you will find it in the “My Rants” category.

So now a little bit about myself!

Why do I Blog?

It is actually very simple! I have a lot to do with technology especially Linux, Computer Security, Mobile Networks, On-Line Games, etc.  Some of the information that I feel I should store for later personal use. What better way then with a blog that I can reference.

Who Am I?

My name is Yury German and I am a Techie! I started with computers at the days of the Commodore 64, as a 12 year old (Now you can guess my age).  I started off playing games, but then got interested in programming, and started programming using assembly. After a while I discovered the 300 baud modem and started adventures of the Bulletin Board. For a while I visited others, and then ran my own using my commodore 64 and a modified hard drive attached to a floppy controller (You had to see this 20 MB monster).

As time progressed I upgraded to an Amiga computer (Which is sitting unused in my closet now but will be revived as soon as I get a network card for it) and started playing with Video and 3D Graphics.  I was involved with a lot of things in the days when no one heard about DVD’s, including Wedding Video, Commercials, and the beginning of 3D Graphics.

After a while I met some people on-line and started working for GENIE (General Electric On-Line Information Service) in the Amiga Forum.  I have a lot of fond memories of this time working for GENIE and of the people I worked with.

As Intel Based PC’s came out of the dark ages I actually built my first PC. It was a 486Dx266 “Monster” with maximum memory (500 mb) and SCSI Fast Wide Drives. The initial use of this monster was for playing some nice games such ad the Wing Commander Series.  This got boring pretty fast, and I installed another SCSI hard drive, and then installed Linux on it  (pre 1.0 release of kernel).  At that time I was using Slackware (I think I still have the CD’s somewhere).

So after some time and a job as a system administrator for a small publishing company I started working as a Unix administrator on HPUX and Solaris systems.  After a few years this got very boring for me, as being a Unix admin is a daily grind.

So I transitioned in to the world of Information Security. My Unix background gave me a lot of experience to work on early firewalls, which were all based on Unix derivatives. I have worked for the largest banks and insurance companies. I even worked for a few years as an Ethical Hacker, and got paid to break in to banks officially (Now that was fun).

I still work in information security and Unix although with a different twist, by working as a Sales Engineer for a company that develops, manufactures and sells specialized systems for performance, network monitoring, security and Voice Over IP Monitoring.  So that is enough about me!

Why Blue Knight?

Well BlueKnight has always been my handle all the way from the days of the Amiga. In my days as a C64 hacker kid I used an acronym of Mr. Wizard for a while, based on J.R. Tolkien books that was as creative as a I could get at 12 years old. So since I love Fantasy and as I grew up a little bit, I decided to “morph” myself in to BlueKnight. It has nothing to do with the police motorcycle club called BlueKnights, or anything else of that sort.

So now you know when I post as BlueKnight where the name came from!
